Walmart’s large-scale partnership with Wiliot marks one of the most ambitious technology deployments ever attempted in retail. According to Supply Chain Dive, Progressive Grocer, and other industry outlets, the project is being extended to all 4,600 U.S. stores and more than 40 distribution centers. It is the first time ambient Internet of Things (IoT) technology has been implemented at this magnitude within a retail network.
Wiliot’s sensors, known as IoT Pixels, use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to transmit real-time data on temperature, movement, and location. Unlike traditional RFID tags, these sensors are battery-free and harvest power from surrounding Bluetooth signals. They are embedded directly into the pallet labels that Walmart already applies in its distribution centers, which means there is no new step required for associates.
Each sensor continuously sends information to the cloud through existing wireless infrastructure, allowing Walmart to monitor products throughout their journey. The company can now see not only where a pallet is, but also how it is being handled and whether it is exposed to temperature or humidity risks.
As Wiliot’s Vice President of Solutions and Architecture, Nick Matthews, explained during an Omni Talk Retail Technology Spotlight interview, “We’re bringing intelligence to the things themselves, so the supply chain can think and act in real time.”
The program began with a pilot in Texas and expanded to hundreds of additional sites after showing strong results in accuracy and visibility. Early pilots demonstrated that the sensors could automatically identify misrouted pallets, detect when perishable goods were left outside refrigeration, and alert teams before issues led to product loss.
That success led Walmart to commit to a full-scale rollout, which will eventually involve tens of millions of connected pallets. As reported by the Financial Times, the system is now active in about 500 locations and will continue scaling through 2026.
For temperature-sensitive goods, the impact is especially important. The sensors allow Walmart to maintain continuous cold chain monitoring and generate digital records that help validate compliance with food safety regulations. The technology reduces waste and supports the company’s broader sustainability commitments by keeping more food in circulation and out of landfills.
