Walmart announced on August 20 that it plans to bring Scintilla, its first-party commerce intelligence platform, to Sam’s Club in 2027. Myron Frazier, chief merchant at Sam’s Club, said the platform will help merchants and suppliers listen better and act faster, and give a clearer view of what matters to members so the club can bring them the right items.
The announcement gives a year and little else. Walmart did not disclose a date within 2027, what access will cost, or which parts of the platform Sam’s Club suppliers will receive. It also announced Scintilla and not Scintilla In-Store, the separate platform for supplier field representatives that Walmart Data Ventures launched in February, so suppliers running club-level field teams should not assume execution tooling arrives alongside the analytics.
The question about which parts arrive is the one worth asking a merchant this fall. Walmart Data Ventures currently lists six Scintilla solutions: Boards, Customer Perception, Digital Landscapes, Insights Activation, Report Builder and Shopper Behavior. Walmart describes Customer Perception as enabling conversations with verified Walmart shoppers. A supplier can ask which of those six come with the 2027 launch.
Sam’s Club is cutting items now and getting the platform in 2027
Latriece Watkins took over as president and chief executive of Sam’s Club this year, arriving from the chief merchandising officer seat at Walmart U.S. Fortune reported in May that she is pursuing fewer choices and sharper curation as her answer to Costco. Sam’s Club stated in January that where a Member’s Mark product could not be reformulated to its Made Without standards, it removed the item from the assortment.
Sam’s Club operates more than 600 clubs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Suppliers negotiating item counts across that base through the coming year will be doing it before the platform Walmart just announced is available to them.
Walmart’s own materials show what suppliers use Scintilla for. Data Ventures runs a Get to Know Scintilla series with sessions built around line reviews and rollbacks, and published a video in February on how Fruit of the Earth uses Walmart first-party data to prepare for line reviews. Sam’s Club line reviews between now and 2027 will happen without that.
