Walmart Drives Efficiency and Sustainability with Automated Packaging Across Next-Gen Fulfillment Centers

Walmart is introducing a new wave of packaging automation designed to make fulfillment faster and more efficient. The retailer announced that Ranpak’s AutoFill system will be installed across five of its next-generation fulfillment centers, following an earlier deployment in McCordsville, Indiana.

The AutoFill solution works in combination with Ranpak’s Decision Tower. Using AI-powered machine vision, the system scans each package to determine the exact amount of empty space inside. It then dispenses just enough paper filler to protect the products and automatically closes the box. The technology is built to improve throughput, cut down on shipping damage, and significantly reduce packaging waste.

The rollout will extend to fulfillment centers in Greencastle, Pennsylvania; Joliet, Illinois; Lancaster, Texas; and Stockton, California. By automating this final step of the fulfillment process, Walmart can move orders more quickly while allowing associates to concentrate on higher-value tasks.

Vik Gopalakrishnan, senior vice president of automation engineering at Walmart, said the initiative reflects the company’s ongoing focus on customer speed and associate experience. “At Walmart, we are constantly seeking solutions that increase speed of service for our customers and simplify work for our associates,” he explained. “Ranpak’s AutoFill system offers us a meaningful way to reduce packaging waste and get our products into our customers’ hands faster.”

Context and Industry Trends

Automation at Scale
Walmart’s next-generation fulfillment centers represent some of the most advanced in the industry. Each site spans nearly two million square feet and is supported by large-scale robotics, extensive conveyor networks, and automated storage systems. These facilities can process nearly half of Walmart’s e-commerce volume and reach the vast majority of U.S. households. Packaging automation plays a critical role in maximizing that capacity.

Traditional packing lines often rely on associates to choose box sizes, add filler, and complete sealing. The AutoFill system reduces that workload, creating consistency at high volumes and allowing centers to move up to 1,200 boxes per hour.

Sustainability Goals in Focus
The expansion also supports Walmart’s environmental priorities. The company has committed to making all private-brand packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable, while also aiming to cut its use of virgin plastic and increase the amount of recycled content. Although Walmart has acknowledged challenges in meeting some of these targets, the AutoFill system represents a tangible step toward reducing waste by minimizing excess filler and improving box utilization.

Walmart has previously tested other packaging automation, including carton-sizing solutions that trim cardboard use by more than a quarter and reduce filler by more than half. Together, these efforts are helping the retailer align operations with sustainability commitments while also lowering costs in the supply chain.

Final Thoughts

Walmart’s expansion of Ranpak’s AutoFill system across its newest fulfillment centers illustrates how automation can deliver both speed and sustainability. By combining precision technology with high-volume processing, the retailer is creating a more efficient and environmentally responsible supply chain. The move signals how packaging, often seen as a small part of fulfillment, has become central to Walmart’s strategy to serve customers quickly, cut costs, and reduce environmental impact.
