This week, Chain Store Age spotlighted a new chapter in Walmart’s AI journey: an expanded rollout of mobile-based AI tools designed specifically for store associates. These aren’t just minor app upgrades. What’s unfolding is a thoughtful application of machine learning and generative AI that’s already changing how associates plan, prioritize, and execute work on the floor.
At the center of this transformation is a suite of new AI capabilities housed within the same associate app that store teams already use. Initially focused on overnight stocking, the technology provides actionable guidance, helping associates know exactly where to go and what to do—based on real-time needs.
According to Walmart, early results are promising. Team leads report that shift planning time has dropped from 90 minutes to just 30. That kind of time savings can translate to better in-stocks, tighter execution, and more time spent coaching teams instead of sorting through task lists.
The AI shift planner is currently being piloted for other shifts, with broader expansion expected.
Walmart associates have used basic conversational AI for years—to find product locations or check their schedules. But a major leap is coming soon: an upgrade powered by generative AI that can interpret complex process guides and convert them into step-by-step instructions.
This means instead of flipping through manuals or hunting for answers, an associate can ask, “How do I process a return without a receipt?” and get a simple, personalized walkthrough. In other words, the associate app is becoming less of a search engine and more of a coach.
Backroom chaos is a retail constant—but Walmart is now bringing RFID data directly into an associate’s field of vision. Building on the VizPick augmented reality tool first introduced in 2021, the company is testing a new capability that overlays RFID data onto the associate’s mobile screen.
When scanning a rack of apparel, for example, the tool can instantly highlight which items need to be stocked on the sales floor. That’s not just faster—it’s a major step toward eliminating guesswork and reducing lost sales due to misplaced inventory.
The technology is currently being piloted but is expected to expand across more locations.
Walmart’s AI-powered translation tool is now available in 44 languages—and it goes beyond simple phrasebook translations. It recognizes Walmart-specific terminology, including private brands like Great Value, and can facilitate both text and voice conversations between associates and customers.
This matters in stores where teams speak multiple languages, and where shoppers may need help in their own language to find what they’re looking for. Walmart has confirmed plans to expand this feature internationally.
All of these tools are powered by Walmart’s proprietary Element AI platform, which was designed to scale machine learning applications across the enterprise. But what sets this rollout apart is the strategy behind it: the belief that AI isn’t meant to replace associates—it’s meant to empower them.
