OnePay, the fintech firm majority-owned by Walmart, is preparing to add cryptocurrency trading to its mobile banking app, according to multiple reports. The new service will allow customers to access bitcoin and ether, supported by Zerohash, a crypto infrastructure provider that helps financial institutions launch digital asset products.
Since its launch in 2021 as a joint venture between Walmart and Ribbit Capital, OnePay has steadily added to its lineup of services. The company already offers high-yield savings accounts, debit and credit cards, buy now pay later financing, and most recently, wireless phone plans. Earlier this year, OnePay announced a partnership with Klarna to bring installment loans to Walmart shoppers, and in June it partnered with Synchrony Financial to reintroduce Walmart credit cards through the OnePay platform.
The introduction of cryptocurrency brings OnePay in line with leading fintech platforms such as PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App, which already provide digital asset trading.
OnePay has been gaining traction in the U.S. fintech market. The app has risen into the top rankings in Apple’s App Store for finance apps, competing with established names like JPMorgan Chase, Robinhood, and Chime. Its integration into Walmart’s checkout process gives it access to millions of shoppers, while its structure as a separate entity allows it to reach beyond Walmart customers.
Zerohash, OnePay’s partner for the rollout, has been building its role as a provider of back-end services for firms entering crypto. In September, the company raised $104 million from investors including Morgan Stanley and Interactive Brokers, underscoring strong demand from traditional finance for digital asset capabilities.
The move comes as U.S. financial institutions expand their presence in crypto. Morgan Stanley recently announced plans to give retail clients direct access to digital assets through its E-Trade subsidiary. With shifting regulations and rising mainstream adoption, crypto offerings are increasingly viewed as a core component of consumer finance.
The addition of bitcoin and ether trading reflects OnePay’s goal of becoming a comprehensive financial platform. Backed by Walmart’s reach and distribution, OnePay is positioning itself as a competitor to some of the largest names in fintech. For Walmart suppliers, the continued growth of OnePay highlights the retailer’s ambition to connect retail and financial services in ways that could reshape how customers pay, borrow, and save.
