Walmart Data Ventures spent four years closing the information gap between suppliers and their own products. The original Walmart Luminate platform gave suppliers transaction-level shopper data. Subsequent releases added channel performance analytics, direct customer surveys through the Walmart Customer Spark Community, pre-purchase search and browse behavior, and advertising activation tied to all of it. Each addition moved suppliers closer to the data fluency that Walmart’s merchant teams have always had. What none of them touched was the store floor itself — what is physically happening at shelf, in real time, during the visit that either fixes the problem or leaves it for the next rep.
That changed on February 23, 2026, with the launch of Scintilla In-Store.
Walmart did not build Scintilla In-Store from nothing. In August 2022, it acquired Volt Systems, a company that had been developing field execution tools specifically for suppliers working in large-format retail. Walmart’s announcement described the acquisition as a move to “fortify store insights and decisioning” — language that telegraphed a clear product vision rather than a speculative bet. Volt kept running under the Walmart umbrella, and brands that adopted it reported real operational gains. Acosta, one of the largest sales and marketing agencies in U.S. consumer goods, reported a 25 percent increase in field efficiency after adoption, pointing to real-time access to backroom locations, on-hand quantities, and modular plans as the primary reason.
Scintilla In-Store is the rebuilt, fully integrated version of what Volt started. It carries forward the core capability — near-real-time inventory visibility drawn from the same item and modular data Walmart’s own associates use — and extends it with a redesigned mobile interface built for speed on the floor, structured task management with supplier-assigned activities, fast product scanning, and store check-in and check-out with visit timing recorded throughout. Field reps arrive knowing what needs attention before they reach the aisle. The reconnaissance phase that used to eat the first quarter of every visit disappears.
One feature warrants particular attention from any supplier running a field program: the certification badge. Scintilla In-Store is the only pathway through which field representatives earn the authorization badge recognized at Walmart stores nationwide, confirming they have completed required store operations training and procedures. Store management teams use that badge to verify a third-party rep’s standing before allowing floor work. A field program not running through the platform faces unnecessary friction at every store entry, beginning with the first visit and compounding from there.
The first is arriving blind. Reps using Scintilla In-Store can review live inventory status, on-hand quantities, and modular plan information before they enter the store. The visit starts from a current picture rather than yesterday’s assumptions.
The second is the phantom out-of-stock — perhaps the most expensive failure mode in large-format retail. Products get buried, mislocated, or left in the backroom after a busy weekend. The inventory system shows units available; the shelf is bare. Customers looking for the item online for pickup see it in stock. They place the order. The picker can’t find it. The order gets canceled or substituted, the customer is frustrated, and the sale is lost. Scintilla In-Store gives field reps the tools to find and resolve these discrepancies while still on-site, before inaccurate inventory data has time to ripple across channels.
The third is task management. Supplier-assigned activities, prioritized work lists, and follow-up tracking are built into the same interface as the inventory data, with fast scanner access throughout. A rep covering dozens of stores each week no longer has to reconcile separate systems, email threads, and printed call sheets to know what needs to happen at each location. Priorities are set by live data, not by memory or the order things happened to get written down.
The fourth is operational accountability at scale. Check-in and check-out, visit timing, task completion status, and certification are all captured through the app. Field managers overseeing large teams across hundreds or thousands of Walmart locations get verifiable records of what happened during each visit, replacing the informal self-reporting that has historically made field performance difficult to measure with any precision.
The platform is available in English and Spanish. It is built to support the full range of organizations that operate in Walmart stores: Preferred Service Providers, Direct Store Delivery suppliers, Supplier Retail Teams, and broker-managed merchandising networks. Large CPG brands running dedicated internal teams and mid-size suppliers working through agencies can both use it. So can DSD suppliers running their own store-level service rhythms. The audience scope was deliberate: field execution at Walmart is not a single-tier operation, and the platform was designed to work across all of them.
A product going out of stock in a Walmart store in 2019 was a single-channel problem. The same failure in 2026 hits multiple channels at once.
Walmart’s stores are now the primary engine of its digital fulfillment operation. More than half of Walmart’s online grocery orders are fulfilled from local store inventory. In fiscal year 2026’s fourth quarter, the company reported that store-fulfilled delivery grew 24 percent globally, and nearly 35 percent of those orders reached the customer’s door in under three hours. When a product is off the shelf or buried in the backroom, it disappears from the pickup queue, the delivery queue, and the in-store aisle simultaneously. The customer placing an order from their couch sees what the inventory system shows. If the inventory system is wrong, the order gets canceled, a substitution goes out, or the customer turns to a competitor before the picker ever reaches the aisle.
Walmart reached $713 billion in fiscal year 2026 revenue partly by converting its 4,600-plus U.S. stores into a fulfillment network that no pure-play e-commerce competitor can match at comparable cost and speed. That network runs on store-level inventory accuracy. An out-of-stock is no longer a shelf problem. It is a fulfillment infrastructure problem that plays out in real time across every channel a customer might use to find the item.
The inventory distortion problem that Scintilla In-Store is positioned to help address is substantial at any scale of measurement. IHL Group’s September 2025 research puts the total global cost of inventory distortion — out-of-stocks and overstocks combined — at $1.73 trillion annually. Out-of-stocks account for approximately $1.2 trillion of that figure. North American retailers carry $415 billion of the total, with IHL identifying execution failures specifically — mislocated product, inaccurate inventory records, gaps in field coverage — as primary contributors alongside theft and supply chain disruption. No field execution platform solves a problem of that magnitude. But Scintilla In-Store directly addresses the layer where supplier teams have historically had the least visibility, the least information, and the fewest tools for same-day resolution.
Walmart Data Ventures launched in 2021 with a clear mandate: build commercially valuable products from Walmart’s first-party data that benefit suppliers and the broader retail ecosystem. By October 2025, the business had grown its U.S. client base 173 percent in a single year, posted 100 percent renewal rates, and expanded into Mexico and Canada. At its annual Inspire conference that month, Walmart Data Ventures released its first subscriber performance data: suppliers on the Scintilla platform grew total omni sales 15 percent faster than comparable non-subscribers, with digital sales outpacing that margin further still.
Each product in the Scintilla suite has closed a specific gap. Shopper Behavior gave suppliers transaction-level visibility into what customers were buying and how. Channel Performance mapped where sales were happening across channels and why. Customer Perception let brands survey verified Walmart shoppers directly through the Customer Spark Community. Digital Landscapes brought pre-purchase behavior — search terms, browse patterns, discovery paths — into the picture. Insights Activation connected all of it to Walmart Connect advertising, letting suppliers move from insight to media investment without leaving the platform.
Scintilla In-Store is what closes the loop at the physical end of the supply chain. Insights Activation connects data to advertising action. Scintilla In-Store connects data to shelf action. A supplier can now track how customers discover a product online, understand what drives them to buy it, activate advertising to reach more of them, and verify that the product is actually available when they arrive to purchase it — whether they’re walking up to the shelf or tapping for delivery from their driveway. The architecture Walmart Data Ventures has been building since 2021 is, in a meaningful sense, now complete.
Walmart Data Ventures has confirmed that AI-driven task prioritization is in active development for the platform. The pattern is consistent with what has already shipped on the insights side: a conversational AI interface for data interpretation, AI-generated summaries of customer survey results, automated audience recommendations for retail media. The near-term version of Scintilla In-Store is a platform where field reps don’t receive a static task list at the start of a visit. They receive a ranked, data-generated agenda built from what the store’s live systems show actually needs to happen that day, at that location, for that supplier’s items. Field labor gets deployed differently when the agenda comes from live data instead of experience and habit.
Scintilla In-Store doesn’t describe what it will do to the accountability dynamic between Walmart and its suppliers. That may be the most important thing to understand about it.
As more field teams log check-ins, task completions, inventory corrections, and visit records through the platform, Walmart accumulates a detailed picture of what third-party field operations actually look like at the store level. Some of what that picture shows will trace back to store operations. Some will trace back to supplier field coverage, visit frequency, and task quality. The data will make those distinctions in ways that quarterly business reviews and informal conversations about execution responsibility cannot. When the question arises in a joint business planning meeting about who owns a particular on-shelf problem, the platform will have an answer that did not exist before.
Suppliers who use the platform can turn that visibility into an asset. Visit records, task completion rates, and documented inventory corrections are concrete evidence of field investment and its results — exactly the kind of data that strengthens a supplier’s position in line reviews and execution conversations. Suppliers whose field programs cannot withstand that level of scrutiny will find those conversations becoming harder over time, not easier.
The Scintilla platform has followed this pattern at every stage since 2021. Suppliers who built early competency with the insights tools were measurably better positioned in category conversations by the time the subscriber performance data was published. The same pressure is now present at the shelf level, with the same long-term consequences for those who move before the standard is set versus those who wait to see how it develops.
