Walmart announced Wednesday that it will now offer its associates a 10% discount on nearly all groceries, including milk, meat, frozen food, and other staple categories. The benefit previously applied to fresh produce and most general merchandise, such as clothing and toys, with broader food coverage offered only during the holiday season.
The change, which takes effect immediately, was communicated to associates in a memo from Chief People Officer Donna Morris. In the memo, she noted that associates have repeatedly requested the expanded benefit, saying it makes a meaningful difference for them and their families.
Approximately 1.6 million U.S. associates are eligible for the discount after 90 days of employment. With the expansion, the savings now apply to about 95% of regularly priced items in stores and online.
The announcement comes amid renewed concerns about inflation, driven in part by tariffs on imported goods. While July’s Consumer Price Index showed that overall food prices were flat compared to the prior month, certain categories — such as household furnishings and supplies — saw notable increases.
In May, Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said the company was “wired for everyday low prices” but acknowledged that the magnitude of cost increases tied to tariffs was more than any retailer could fully absorb.
By widening its grocery discount, Walmart is giving associates additional buying power at a time when price sensitivity remains high for many consumers.
The policy change, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, comes just ahead of Walmart’s next earnings report on August 21. Analysts will be watching for any commentary on how inflation, tariffs, and this expanded benefit are shaping sales and associate engagement.
